Mercedes-AMG GT SUV — What AMG Says It Wants To Build

Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the GT SUV, an all-electric, full-size performance model developed in-house around the brand’s new AMG.EA architecture. Its pitch combines sports-car handling and sustained power with the space and long-distance comfort expected of an SUV. The first announced lineup includes the GT 53, GT 55 and GT 63. Here is what AMG has confirmed so far—and what buyers are still waiting to learn.

An Electric SUV With AMG’s Name On The Engineering

AMG says the GT SUV is the first full-size SUV it has developed entirely in-house, from the vehicle architecture upward. It is the second model based on AMG.EA, the company’s dedicated electric performance platform.

The SUV’s design brief is to pair a low centre of gravity and sporty seating position with full-size proportions. AMG also says it has used lightweight construction and vehicle-design measures to manage weight, though it has not published a curb weight.

The three-model range will consist of the GT 53 SUV, GT 55 SUV and GT 63 SUV. AMG describes the 63 as the top model and says it delivers up to 1,153 horsepower at peak. The company also highlights up to 711 horsepower of continuous output—a measure intended to speak to sustained performance, rather than a brief maximum.

Charging, Handling And Sound

AMG says the SUV uses an 800-volt battery with directly cooled cylindrical cells. Its advertised maximum DC charging power is up to 710 kW, with up to 450 kilometres of WLTP-rated driving range added in 10 minutes under the stated conditions. That is a manufacturer claim; charging speed and distance added will depend on the charger, battery temperature and other conditions.

The GT SUV also introduces AMG Active Ride Control+, a suspension system with active pitch and roll stabilisation. AMG says the system is designed to balance precise handling with comfort. An active roof spoiler and air panel form part of the vehicle’s aerodynamic package.

Although the GT SUV is electric, AMG promises an immersive sound experience designed to evoke the character of a V8 or six-cylinder engine. The company has not framed this as a combustion engine: the announced models are electric, and the sound is part of the driving experience.

What Buyers Still Don’t Know

The announcement gives a strong outline of the project, but leaves practical questions open. AMG has not yet provided a complete set of model-by-model acceleration, top-speed, battery-capacity and total-range figures. Nor has it disclosed final pricing for Canada or the United States.

The company’s charging and range claims will need context from independent testing and real-world driving. Cargo space, rear-seat measurements, towing capacity and the details of standard and optional equipment will also matter to shoppers comparing the GT SUV with other large electric performance SUVs.

Availability will vary by market. Mercedes-Benz Canada says the models are expected in Canada in summer 2027; Mercedes-Benz USA has announced a summer 2027 arrival for the 2028 model-year lineup. Buyers elsewhere will need local launch and specification details.

The Role In AMG’s Lineup

The GT SUV gives AMG a dedicated electric flagship-style SUV while retaining the GT name’s performance associations. Its success will depend on how well the production vehicle delivers on two demanding promises: repeatable performance and everyday usability.

The announced technology is ambitious, especially the charging-power figure and active suspension. The next test is how those systems work together on ordinary roads, during long trips and under repeated hard driving. Until full specifications and independent evaluations arrive, AMG has made its intentions clear; the ownership case is still taking shape.

MaxTake

AMG is proposing an electric SUV built around sustained power, fast charging and sharper handling, with the comfort and room expected of a full-size model. Those are confirmed priorities; the real-world range, pricing and day-to-day practicality remain to be established. The GT SUV has made its debut. Its biggest claims now have to earn their place on the road.
